Enigma’s secret was never the message. The messages went out to anyone with an aerial. The secret was where the dials were set: 159 quintillion possible configurations, changed every night at midnight.
Turing’s Bombe read no German. It raced through dial settings and threw out every one that led to a contradiction — elimination, not comprehension. But it had one dependency: a crib, a fair guess at part of what a message said. And the cribs came from people: the predictable habits of the operators.
The gap was not in the data. It was in the habits.
